Best all Natural Toothpaste: The Tooth Messiah

Hello my friends of old and new,

Let’s talk about toothpaste!

That minty joy that helps our breath to stay fresh and cleans our gums and pearly whites.

To ensure that our mouth and teeth are healthy, we need to take certain measures, like brushing at least twice daily (I like to after eating anything besides an apple), flossing, rinsing, and brushing our tongues and roof of our mouths.

In addition to these tasks we must make conscious decisions in the toothpaste that we use on a daily basis. Why, you ask? Because conventional pastes are filled with ingredients that are *surprise surprise* despicable!

Fluoride Ain’t Right

Let’s break it down a little. For years, we humans have been taught and made to believe that fluoride is the end all be all for the health of our teeth.

Dentists and other health professionals boasted of its powers and even today, to find a toothpaste without fluoride is rare indeed.

However, over the past few years health professionals have reexamined fluoride only to discover that fluoride not only does nothing helpful to the teeth, it is harmful on many levels, especially for humans to ingest (sigh).

Remember that everything that goes on our bodies eventually end up inside as well.

Adverse Effects of Fluoride

Fluoride is an endocrine disruptor that can affect your bones, brain, thyroid gland, and your blood sugar levels. There have been over 30 cases that have linked brain damage to fluoride ingestion and overexposure of fluoride is noted in children and teens across North America.

Yet again we, as a people, are practicing damaging habits in the name of , what exactly? Maybe it’s just that we are collectively unaware or maybe there is something more sinister at play (capitalism? vampires? who knows!).

No matter the reason, once we become aware we have the power to make changes that benefit our health.

Other Harmful/Unnecessary/Unwanted Ingredients

Some other ingredients to look out for when you are buying toothpaste (these are in so many other products that it’s weird) are:

  • SLS ( Sodium Lauryl Sulfate)- known skin irritant/a pesticide/pollutes groundwater/stays on body tissue
  • Artificial Flavors / Colors- they aren’t natural.. any need?
  • Propylene Glycol- primary substance is antifreeze/synthetic/potentially toxic to kidneys and liver/probably not safe for pregnant women or babies
  • DEA- hormone disruptor
  • Artificial Sweeteners- like we need more sugar
  • Triclosan- been linked to heart disease and heart failure/ interferes with muscle function

These naughty no-no’s are the reason that I opt to make my own cosmetic products or buy from lines that use natural ingredients.

When it comes to toothpaste I have had reasonable success with DIY mixes but by and by prefer to buy an already made one.

Popular Natural Toothpaste Brands

The most popular natural toothpastes are Redmond Earthpaste ($7+), Jack ‘N Jill Natural Toothpaste ($13+), Dr. Bronners All in One Toothpaste (13+), David’s Natural Toothpaste ($7+), and Jason, with my personal all time favorite being Jason.

Click here if you want to try one of these.

JĀSÖN® The Tooth and Mouth Messiah

Jason’s roots are in California (where my own are) and while other companies were mixing chemical madness, Jason was opting for a more wholesome approach.

Jason or  JĀSÖN®as it is rightfully spelled comes from the Greek word meaning healer and after using many of their products I can attest to the healing properties.

On the website you can find information like their code of honor:

JĀSÖN® Code of Honor:

  • Select safe, gentle and effective ingredients
  • Rigorously test every formula to ensure safety and efficacy
  • Never test on animals
  • Constantly innovate and improve

This code demonstrates the spirit of the company and is why I love this as my go-to natural tooth/mouth care brand, among other things.

Companies like this make me so happy as they prove that you can have a wholesome, effective, cost-effective product that rivals popular/traditional brands.

I have tried various products on this line but my favorites are:

Jason Powersmile Whitening Toothpaste

Price: $7+ (retail)

Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon or eBay

Size: 6oz

My Rating: 10 out of 10

This one is great as it helps in whitening and freshens as I brush my tongue and roof of my mouth.

This one is not too minty but I prefer it to other brands because my mouth and teeth genuinely feel clean each time after I brush.

With other natural brands I have found that they don’t freshen and I’m left feeling like I need to brush again. I don’t have that problem with this toothpaste.

This toothpaste is one of the most popular on the whole line and for good reason as users are left singing “so fresh and so clean clean”

Jason Sea Fresh Toothpaste

Price: $5+ (retail)

Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon or eBay

Size: 6oz

My Rating: 10 out of 10

I absolutely love this one as I feel that it is packed with power and gets the job done with a super minty seal.

This coupled with their mouthwash really leaves me feeling clean.

I like to mix it up throughout the day but prefer to start with this as I feel that it sets the tone for a minty fresh day.

This one boasts of being both antiplaque and strengthening which is great for cleaning and for helping anyone with sensitive teeth.

Jason Sea Fresh Mouthwash

Price: $10+ (retail)

Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon or eBay

Size: 16oz

My Rating: 10 out of 10

Wow! That’s just what you’ll say when you try this mouthwash as it is fiery.. but in a good way.

This mouthwash is so strong that I often dilute it with water and it still works a treat. When using it I feel that it treats all bad bacteria and leaves me feeling and smelling quite fresh. This is a great addition to either toothpaste above and is perfect for a happy, clean, spearminty mouth.

The End

There you have it!

That is the best (in my mind’s eye) all natural toothpaste. Some of the others that I have listed are popular for a reason and if interested they are worth a shot. However, of all the ones that I have tried and tested, it is Jason that consistently brings the best results.

  1. thThanks for sharing this article, I did know the long effect of fluoride, sweetener, other are unknown to me. What brand would you recommend for tooth sensitiveness?

    1. There are some great products on Jason’s line that help for strengthening and building the enamel back (which when it is exposed causes tooth sensitivity). I suffered from this years ago after I foolishly whitened my teeth and found that such went away after switching to an all natural toothpaste. Hope that helps!

  2. This is looking great! I like how you broke down your post and it’s very easy to navigate. I got some great insight on natural toothpastes and I had no idea fluoride was bad for you! This gives me a whole new perspective! My only suggestion would be to maybe add a picture up in the fluoride section somewhere. I could use some more visual of fluoride’s effects on the body. Looks like I have some work to do.

    1. Hey thanks for your comment, I am glad that it brought something to your attention that you were not aware of before, and hey, thanks so much for your suggestion there! Always nice to hear a great suggestion 🙂

  3. Oral care is one the most important things in our daily routine and it is important to be aware of what is good and what is bad for our teeth. This article correctly points out the unnecessary ingredients that we need to avoid at all costs while purchasing products. Also, the recommendations given for toothpastes at the end were of great help to me.

    1. Hi Tushar, thank you so much for your response! I agree with you completely, more awareness is so important for all of us! Thanks for reading through and sharing your own knowledge!

  4. I had no idea that fluoride had such harmful effects on the bones and teeth. Such chemicals are usually ignored and we never realize their harmful effects on our body.
I would surely switch my toothpastes to one of your recommendations and see if I could feel the difference in my tooth color and overall oral hygiene.

    1. Hi Shrey! I am so glad that this post brought some information to you that you didn’t know before! Please let me know about the changes you see once you make the switch 🙂

  5. Hi there! Interesting read. I grew up with no fluoride in my water and we always used a toothpaste called Euthymol. It was an unholy pink and burned like anything but no fluoride! I actually quite liked it.

More recently, like ten years ago, I just used salt on my teeth. But I missed the minty freshness! So now I’m back to a natural toothpaste from a health food shop.

    1. That is amazing that you grew up in a place with no fluoride in the water? Where is that, if you don’t mind me asking? Sounds amazing! Also after growing up that way, have you ever had toothpaste with fluoride?

  6. Wow, very helpful article. I never knew fluoride can be that harmful. When I was a kid, all I remember watching a popular toothpaste commercial is the tagline “With Fluoride”. More than promoting the All Natural Toothpaste products, which I applaud, you are doing a great service to inform us. Thanks for this Manika. As for your products, you surely made me want to try one out. I’ll also see if there is one for toddlers. I’ll introduce them to my babies. =) Thanks again.

  7. We’ve used Dr. Bronners or Jason’s for years. A few weeks ago, I went away for the weekend and forgot my toothbrush and toothpaste. The hotel gave me a little pack with both and I thought, no big deal as I was only staying over one night. Wow. I won’t forget again, or if I do I will go out and find some decent stuff. The conventional stuff felt like swishing gasoline.

    1. Hi Susie! Thank you for sharing your experience with the rest of us! I lol when I read your likening the taste to gasoline and understand that completely! Once you are used to quality, you can hardly go back! Which is your favorite between Bronners and Jason?

  8. This makes so much sense. I’ve been wanting to try something more natural, and now I feel I have a better foundation of knowledge to make the right decision for me and my kids. Thanks so much for the all the great info!

    1. Hello there! Ahh I am so happy for your comment 🙂 it is definitely the right switch for the health of you and your kiddies and once I made the switch was sure that it was right for me too! Thanks for your comment, please share your experiences with us here!

  9. I think I don’t want the toothpaste that’s in my house and going in my children’s mouths to be used anymore!!!! I’m going to give some of your suggestions a try!!! I want them to be healthy
