Eco Styler Gel Review- All you Need to Know +Video

Hey beauties! Happy happy Natural Hair Friday! Oh yes Friday’s just got better because every single Friday we celebrate and honor those beautiful fibers atop our head by talking natural hair and nothing but.

On my natural hair journey, I have learned to embrace my curly hair with the aid of botanical conditioners and curly friendly products. It helped me intensely to hear from fellow curlies on their take of certain products and though the product line that I will be reviewing today is already included in my top products for curly hair, I think this line warrants its own post to give full details on why this is favorited by many in the natural hair world.

Who It’s For

From my research I have found that many ladies who fall in a type 3b- 4c pattern have great results with the Ecostyler line by Ecoco. The favorite across boards seems to be the Ecostyler Olive Oil gel (though there are 10 different gels) and I can totes see why! It was the first one that I ever tried on my hair when transitioning from using heat tools to wearing my natural hair. I was not aware of the curly girl method at the time nor did I understand how beneficial it was to use gel on wet hair rather than dry for maximum results but I often used the Olive Oil gel for a twist out and had some decent results.

All of the gels on the Ecostyler line seem to match the next, in my opinion, and I don’t find that, for example, the olive oil gel is superior to the black castor and flaxseed oil one or vice versa. I seem to have the same results regardless of which one I use.

The Greatest Thing About the Line

The greatest thing about this line is the fact that the price is beyond reasonable. You can get a 32oz tub for about $5 or $6… yeah a lot for a little and it lasts ages. It does not contain silicones or other ingredients that are harmful to the hair and is one of those green brands that cares about the environment as much as the hair! Hello yessss! All this and it works on the same level as top brands like Shea Moisture and Deva Curl.

I will admit that I favor Deva Curl, As I Am, and Shea Moisture for my product lines of choice but I ALWAYS have an Eco style gel on hand because they are very reliable.

I also love the Curl ‘N Style Cocktail so much! It smells great and the feel is just fine. The Curl ‘N Style Cocktail encourages softness and locks in moisture. For those of use who want some extra protection (besides our conditioner) a good curl cream does wonders, and this is one of those good good curl creams.

Ingredients:

Eco style(r) Gel

Water (Aqua), Carbomer, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Glycerin, Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Polysorbate 20, Tetrasodium EDTA, (Argan Oil/Olive Oil/Castor Oil- depending on the gel), Fragrance (Parfum), CI 19140 Yellow 5 – Love and Pride

Ecostyler Curl ‘N Style Cocktail

Water (Aqua), Emulsifying Wax, PVP, Glycerin, Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, Euterpe Oleracea (Acai) Fruit Oil, Collagen Amino Acids, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Ricinodendron Rautanenii (Mongongo) Oil, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Oil, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate, Carbomer, Fragrance (Parfum), Aminomethyl Propanol, Tetrasodium EDTA

How I Use It

I always exit the shower with my hair feeling like slippery seaweed because my botanical conditioner is still in it. I take the cream first and apply it while my hair is flipped over then repeat with the gel, scrunching towards my scalp as I do. Once finished, I slowly rotate my head back to its normal position then take the gel rub it between the palms of both hands then apply it to my hair in the front and finish off with a scrunch towards the scalp.

I may or may not scrunch with a t-shirt to remove excess product and water. I let my hair air dry. When it is completely dry I take my fingers place them on my scalp, then gently shuffle my fingers, opening up the curls for a bit more volume and freedom (I never force any curls apart). My hair has a gel caste on the first day (or maybe first couple of days) but gets softer as the week progresses whilst still keeping its curl pattern. I use coconut oil each day when I place my hair in a pineapple and if I need to refresh in between washes I do so by following this method.

The Ecostyler gel has more of a crunch (hold) than other gels but this just means that my hair will last longer. Since I only wash my hair once a week, longevity in between washes is a beautiful thing!

Pros

  • Cost. Literally look at the price of this line!
  • Accessibility. You can get this at just about any beauty supply and many shops like Walmart, CVS, Target, Walgreens (some products you have to go somewhere that specially sells them or shop only online.. but not this one!)
  • It works. All us curlies need is a product that holds our hair in place, and defines what we are already working with. Every gel on this line quite simply works in that way!
  • Longevity. It lasts really long and a little goes a long way.
  • Green. Ecoco is a green company and they link beauty and the environment.. which we love!

Cons

  • It doesn’t smell as wonderful as some of the other gels that I like to use (it doesn’t smell bad either)

Final Thoughts

The Ecostyler line is a great line for many reasons. If you are someone who wants a top shelf product that works but do not want to shell out an enormous amount to get said product, then this is the one you are looking for. It is always worth it to have one of the gels on hand as the hold is great. Remember that if you want your natural hair to be its best self you need to take care of it regularly and thoroughly! No one product will give you desired results if you don’t first take the steps to fully care for your hair. I have written many posts about natural haircare and if you are just starting out on wearing your natural hair, I would recommend reading this post about Curly Girl the Handbook.

Bottom Line

Ecostyler = Good! This line is stellar for the above reasons and I definitely recommend it for all ladies with curly hair.. specifically type 3- type 4.

  1. I will consider this product. It has been a trial and error method hunting for the right products that work with my type 4 spongy natural hair. I normally use shea butter for a twist out and haven’t tried gel for a twist out, but I may see how that works. The price makes this an easy consideration. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Wooow! I have been looking for something like this for a long time. To be honest I tried a lot of products for my damage hair and non of them worked. I will try this one for sure! thank you for the information 😀

  3. Excellent reviews!! I have been using the green tub for the longest. Absolutely love it. I’ve wanted to try others but did not know which ones to try because there are so many. Thanks to you, I now have made a choice to try the Eco curl and style Cocktail. I normally wear braid outs, so Can this one be use alone or do I need a cream with it? Thanks again curly girl!

    1. The Curl and Style cocktail is a cream and can certainly be used for twist outs or braid outs but I would make sure to saturate the hair in water first and also use a gel for extra hold! 🙂

  4. This is great information. I like how you put the ingredients as well. My cousin has curly hair so I think this product could help her.
    Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  5. While you have a lot of pros about this product, I have a big con that most people don’t even realize. This eco style gel product and their people are aligning themselves with one of the worst fraternity Phi Delta Theta. They are known for their ongoing sexual/harrassment cases and even racial harrasment cases! It’s so important nowadays that we watch out who our companies do business with and I’m telling you, do not support them!
