Plopping Curly Hair- You So Need to Try This if You Have Curly Hair!

Hey handboookers!

Let us begin with a moment of sheer exultation, and why? Because it’s Natural Hair Friday that’s why!! So wooo yeah yeah and hooray for today! NHF’s are a weekly reminder for all of us to honor those amazing fibers that grow from our head and isn’t it amazing to learn new/valuable ways to treat our curly whirlies? When it comes to curly hair most of us want the same thing and defined curls are certainly among those wants! So today let’s learn a simple trick for achieving such results with a method called plopping.

What is the Plopping Method

This is quick to do and oh so handy! Not only does it help with curl definition, it also speeds up drying time and allows you to dress/do some makeup without disturbing the curls, or slimily easing into your top/dress! It involves plopping your hair atop the cloth of your choice and leaving it there to define baby define. All you need is:

  • A microfiber towel or t-shirt
  • Your favorite styling products
  • Your wet natural hair

…and hazaaa the plopping method with all its ease!

Why the T-Shirt/Microfiber Towel Over Regular Terry Cloth Towel?

In the curly hair world you will likely have heard that you do not want to use a regular towel for your hair plenty of many of times. But why exactly? Well think of your car, a cherished wooden surface, an expensive pair of shoes, or even your dry-clean only special clothes. You cannot clean them with just anything, oh no! You must take precious care with precious things and your hair is no exception. Terry cloth towels can be very rough on our hair and are one of those factors in unnecessarily dry hair as well as frizz. Which are just *surprise surprise* unnecessary! So make a conscious choice and choose a material that is delicate on the hair and still serves the same purpose!

How to Plop… Lol!

  1. Take your microfiber towel or t-shirt and place it on a flat surface (for a shirt make sure that the collar is facing towards you though some people do achieve it the other way)
  2. Cleanse or co-wash your hair or do the Curly Girl Method
  3. Split your hair in 2 or more sections and rake the curly-friendly gel of your choice into each section
  4. Flip your hair over (you might find it easier to rake it forward to do so)
  5. Plop it onto your cloth
  6. Grab the section furthest from you and move it/place it to where it covers the back of your head
  7. Take the sleeves or the material that is closest to you (by your forehead) and tie it around your head
  8. Tuck any hanging fabric
  9. This should stay in place with no issues and you can either leave on for 10-20 minutes, release, then let air dry or leave on overnight if you prefer
  10. Untie the knot, let your curls loose and enjoy the super definition!

Place it

Rake it Forward

Plop it!

Bring Material Forward

Tie it

Tuck it and then Go!

It’s that simple ladies and oh aren’t the greatest joys in life? I do this once a week on *surprise surprise* Natural Hair Friday’s and am so thankful for it mainly because I’m an air-dryer and before I learned this method had the most uncomfortable time putting my tops/dresses on after hair wash day. With this method my hair is all secure and getting that good good definition without the slimy after effects! Hello easy life!

  1. Wow! I love the method and you made it simpler with this nice video, the final result was super, I love your hair curls, my hair is curly but not like yours, it’s closer to wavy than curly, but I really loved the idea and will give it a try.
    Thank you!

    1. Rawan, I am sure you will love this! It will make your waves so define and last for a great amount of time plus you can do what you have to do when you get out of the shower and not have to worry about dripping hair, wet clothes, and you do not have to worry about drying or styling your hair. This method does it all for you! Good luck and let us know if you ever need anything 🙂

  2. I just came across your website Manika-Nia and I thought that it might very well be of interest to my wife (as you can see from my photo, it cannot be for me). She was born with extremely curly hair, and always wanted to have straight silky hair. She has tried all sorts of products and spends a fortune at hairdressers to straighten her hair. Then the minute it rains, or it gets humid, here we go again. She always felt she had been cheated by nature.

So I will show her your website and hopefully you will be the one she has been looking for since her birth.

Thanks for sharing this great info.

    1. John your post has made my day! So many of us once (or still) want silky straight hair because that is the norm and what many in our society deem as beautiful. However, many of us were born with wavy, curly, kinky, and coily hair and so such a dream is simply unnatural. It is hard for most of us to embrace our God-given gift but once we do it just feels so right! I hope that we can inspire and be inspired by your curly wife and please let her know we are always here to help with hair, especially on a Friday 😉 thanks so much for your post and for sharing!

  3. Wow! Great way to do curly hair. My daughters have natural curly hair. Even though they go to the hairdresser sometimes, they also do their hair themselves. The Plopping Method is definitely something for them to try, so I will share this post with them. It is quite simple and manageable. I think they will enjoy NHF and will save them money too.

    1. Hi Carol, thanks for sharing with your daughters! I hope that they love NHF’s as much as we do and that it saves them money and helps them with their curly hair 🙂 the plopping method has surely been a send for me and I would not have it any other ways so I am sure that your girls will feel the same way! Have a fantastic day, and don’t be a stranger x
