Deva Curl Light Defining Gel- What is all the Hype About?!
Hey beauties, want to know the truth about Deva Curl Light Defining Gel? Then read on..
The Pre-Story
I had the most beautiful opportunity last week and the experience has left me glowing.
Upon visiting home (sunny California), I had the chance to look after most of my girls by way of either a tamarind facial or a curly girl hair treatment- and it felt absolutely amazing to do so.
Very little makes me feel greater than looking after the ones I care about via Mother Nature’s gifts. Needless to say, I had a blast conditioning their hair, speaking of curl types, discussing the best natural products for their hair, and styling their lovely locks.
Only Some Curls are Blessed
In speaking to my sissys I gleaned that they had some of the same natural hair woes that I did- gets too frizzy, no definition, too poofy, won’t last, gets dry, don’t know how to style it, don’t know what to put on it…
For those reasons (among others), most of my lovely ladies find it easier to straighten their hair rather than letting their free curls fly- even though some of them want to embrace their natural hair.
“Yours look nice! I just don’t think mine can do that..”
Those amateur consultations that I had with my girls helped me to recognize something important. Just last year I was in the same position and frame of mind as many of them.
I used to think that those natural curly beauties that I glimpsed on instagram had some kind of blessed genes or had the kind of hair that allowed for perfect ringlets whereas mine simply didn’t work that way.
At the time I didn’t realize that I could be in love with my natural hair and feel amazing rocking my own curls.
It must be that all curls are not created equal…
The above sentiments might be true but one thing that I have learned is that all curls, waves, kinks, and coils have the ability to be what we want them to be with a little help from some friends. As for me, I went from this:
to this:
.. in under a year thanks to the incredible natural hair products and techniques that I was made aware of by other women who shared their hair journey.
Some of my girls are already super happy with their hair (they all have amazing hair!), but speaking to the ones who were interested in transitioning from straight to curly, about the products that helped my hair transformation, and helping them on their own hair journey meant the world to me.
In the same sphere, if my experiences can help any other natural head out there, then my work is complete! This is why I had to write a detailed review on this product here:

My Thoughts
I first heard of this product in May 2016 after a few youtube gurus presented it on their channel alongside a tutorial.
In fact, once I decided to go all natural (around May 2016) all I kept hearing about was Deva Curl this and Deva Curl that!
The curly world was abuzz with this line. I knew it had to be worth a shot, so I bought the curling cream and light defining gel together.
I could not believe what it did to my hair. My hair was accustomed to being straightened, so as it goes, when I tried to go all curly the ends of my hair would not cooperate.
They were stringy and would not curl to save my life. The whole curly look was off.
Deva Curl was the first product that did something revolutionary (without me using a twist out or finger curling my hair at night), and though it was not perfect after the first use, it helped me to finally achieve the natural look I was after.
- The smell is super sweet and glides on smooth without being sticky on the hands or the hair
- It does dry with an almighty crunch (gel caste) but by day two I still have the definition but with soft curls in place of hard ones
- I love that I can pair this gel with another product line’s cream and still have amazing results which does not always happen with other gels
Who It Is For
The website says: “If you want a non-drying light-hold gel that’ll leave your curls soft, defined and frizz-free, your search is over!” and I think that sums it up to a tee.
If you do not have straight hair then this light-defining gel can certainly enhance your curls, but if in need of more of a hold there is an ultra defining gel that does the job well.
Pros
- Non- sticky
- Lovely smell
- Easy application
- Longevity. I bought the bottle I have in May 2016… Still going (I alternate weeks of the gel/jelly products that I use.. still though)
- Definition
- Tames frizzy lizzies
- The community that surrounds DevaCurl products (there will always be someone in which you can share your experiences with and learn from)
Cons
- Can be pricey (probably the most expensive product line that I use)
- Not available offline in some countries and parts of the US
- Some ingredients may not be best for hair in the long run
What it does for me
- gives volume
- tames frizz
- the ultimate in curl definition!
- soft curls after the second day

Final Verdict
There are so many ladies out there who would love to unleash their curls but think its just not possible with what they have.
If you fall into that category then I would highly recommend giving Deva Curl Light Defining Gel a shot as it proved to me that my natural hair could be just as beautiful as I always hoped it would be.
This product is a favorite to many women for the right reasons and the hype around it lives in its results!

My cousin from Britain uses this product finding it in February last month I believe and she hasn’t put it down ever since. Seeing your hair and comparing it to my cousin it’s very alike. Now my sisters are being influenced to give it a go.
I would definitely recommend it to other women even if it’s just to try it out because from what I can gather from the many reviews I’ve read and the way it’s uplifted my cousin, it can’t hurt to give it a try.
Thanks for sharing, Manika.

Awesome post! I am now on my hair journey; motivated by you mostly. Ordering devacurl products right now. I don’t like the Cantu products that I’ve been using. I am currently on week number 2. I do see a difference already. I’m excited to try this.
Hey Laika,
What week are you on now? How’s the progress? Highs? Lows?
