Kinky Curly Curling Custard Review: Best Hair Products for 3B Curls
Hola chicas!
Today, like every Friday, is Natural Hair Friday!!!, and we are kicking off with a curly girl fave: Kinky Curly. Traditionally, I switch up my styling product every Friday when doing my wash ‘n go, but for the sake of this review, I’ve used Kinky Curly Curling Custard as the singular styling product for 4 weeks to let you know just how its paired with my 3b curls.
Who are Kinky Curly?
Kinky Curly is a natural hair product company that was established in 2003. On their website they write, “Stop being a slave to your hair. Step away from the blowdryer. Unplug that flat iron. Go Natural and experience the freedom of wash and go hair. Natural hair is beautiful hair and with the right products and styling techniques can flourish and grow to great lengths! Kinky-Curly TM brand hair products are formulated to add moisture, give hold without drying hair out and also offer protection from the elements.”
Ahhh the great ones! They also are committed to “developing hair products that not only deliver results but also nourish your hair with natural ingredients that moisturize and strengthen.”
Products They Offer
Kinky Curly has 17 products including three types of curly-hair brushes and a wide-tooth comb. While their product list is sizeable, two are most well-known and widely used: Knot Today, the “creamy herbal conditioner and detangler designed to smooth the cuticle and remove knots, snarls and tangles from thick curly textured hair” and the Curling Custard. Both were on Essence’s Beauty Best Sellers list and the Curling Custard received the highest honor of Hottest Makeup and Hair Products.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard
This product is an all-in-one styling product that can be used on its own to achieve fab results. Kinky Curly writes, “It reduces bulk, defines & elongates your curls helping them to ‘hang’ better. CURLING CUSTARD TM will bring out the natural curl or wave pattern you never knew you had! It is an advanced botanical formula made with ingredients that nourish and strengthen the hair. Utilizing the humectant properties of the Agave Nectar, CURLING CUSTARD TM will give weight to your hair, define your curls, remove frizz, provide long lasting hold and shine without ever being greasy, crunchy or drying to your hair. This high performance product is very concentrated so a little goes a long way.”
What’s in it?
botanical infusion of water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle and marshmallow, organic aloe vera juice, agave nectar extract, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin e), pectic, citric acid, potassium sorbate and natural fragrance
Where to Buy it
If you are in the states, then literally anywhere! Ok not really, but most beauty shops will carry them, CVS, and Target. If you are outside of the states but in a popular city like London or Liverpool then a beauty shop (what is deemed an Afro-Carribean hair shop) will likely have it. However, if you are away from any of these places (or just like to shop online) then Amazon or Target are your best bets!
Who is it for?
It is for all us naturals! However, in my research, I’ve found that many 3A-4A’s find this especially complimentary for their hair types.
Me and the Curling Custard
I first heard of Kinky Curly back in 2013, 3 years before I would finally go all natural. I saw it in a beauty shop in London along with products from the Mixed Chicks line, and thought that there were finally products made specifically for me.
But I didn’t actually try it out until the fall of 2016. That was when I went product-crazy and purchased nearly every product that I’d read about or heard about via youtube and social media. I was combining all my styling products back then, so I wasn’t really allowing any one product to shine and show me what it had.
I began to use Deva Curl and As I Am regularly and all the others stayed stagnant on my shelf. Flash forward to early 2018 and, as it happens, I decided to give my Curling Custard–– along with the other stagnant products– another whirl.

As I say in the beginning, my routine included switching up my styling product each week: As I Am one Friday, Shea Moisture the next, then Deva Curl etc. In doing so I found that some weeks were better than others, but each time I got to my Curling Custard it was yielding lovely results.
When I determined that I would try out one product for the duration of each passing month, I knew that Kinky Curly was going to be the first in my hair trials.
Using the product for the entire month has given me the opportunity to really see it in action. For the last 4 weeks I only used Jason’s Smoothing Sea Kelp conditioner, Shea Moisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave in Conditioner, and Kinky Curly’s Curling Custard, without refreshing or rewetting between the Friday’s?!
My Results
Week 1
The first week was spectacular! I mean I had definition pretty much until day 7 and many of my curls were still in shiny clumps, meaning the frizz was kept at bay. I was really blown away in this first week.
Week 2
Week 2 was absolutely dreadful. Day 1 and 2 were grand but as soon as day 3 popped around my hair lost all moisture so was incredibly frizzy, the back felt ratty and just looked really bad. I wore it up in a pineapple from day 3 and couldn’t help frowning at the dry ends.
Week 3
Week 3 was definitely better than week 2 but still by day 5 I was seeing so much dryness and frizz. I even tried to help it by putting coconut oil and avocado oil on the ends, but it didn’t really work. Days 2 through 4 were the greatest and it just went down hill from there :(.
Week 4
It was fairly good in week 4. I used so much more than in week 2 because I wanted it to last all week. By day 6 I was still able to wear it down, which is pretty amazing because some weeks by day 4 it has to go up in a pineapple or pineapple bun for me to feel cute! I still found that the back was really dry (aka frizzy) and while there were some shiny clumps, the dry parts were far more problematic.

Is Curling Custard the Best Hair Product for 3B Curls?
I would definitely say it is a contender. Being able to wear my hear down on day 6 is pretty groundbreaking, and such is certainly not the case for every product that I have tried. However, I’m still looking for that one styling product that gives my 3b ringlets hold, definition and softness for an entire week!
Final Verdict
If you’re committed to wearing your natural hair then you need to try out great products! This is definitely one of those products to try because of what it leaves out, what it adds in, how it holds curls and how a little goes a long way. Overall, this is a YES product that I totes recommend ??

Ok, I am sold! I recently went thru some serious hair loss (about 75% of my hair). That being said, it has started to grow back in. I have always had curly hair, which I don’t mind so much any more. BUT my hair is growing in sooooo curly. This will help tame it some right? I am still at the stage where using styling elements and heat is not good. So I am stuck with just natural for now, until my hair grows out significantly more. It is just so curly 🙁 Will this help?
Hello mommy of Matt! Thank you so much for your comment and for sharing the place and stage that your hair is currently in. When your curls are unruly all they need is a botanical conditioner and curly-friendly product like Kinky-Curly’s Curling Custard. It is definitely worth a shot, and please let me know how it goes!
