Schmidt’s Sensitive Formula- Best Baking Soda-Free Deodorant? ?
Welcome to another in the Natural Deo Chronicles, with this segment once again about the forerunner in natural deodorant: Schmidt’s.
Many of you will know from my previous post that the oh-so-lovely-smelling Bergamot + Lime stick deodorant really did a number on my pits.
The baking soda within it instructed my underarms to become red, sore, itchy and scaly! Sooooo, even though I loved the brand and the deo did work on keeping odor away, the discomfort was far too much to bear!
When I found out about Schmidt’s sensitive formula line, free from the odor-eliminating but problem-inducing baking soda, I was totes excited ? .
I ordered from Amazon straight away and because I have now been using the stick for quite some time, I can now give you the tatatateeeeeeee!
Schmidt’s Sensitive Formula
- Peppermint + Chill
- Evergreen Dreams
- Snow Day
- Here + Now (by Justin Bieber)
- Sage + Vetiver
- Patchouli + Hops
- Rose + Black Pepper (Award Winner)
- Jasmine Tea
- Lily of the Valley
- Coconut Pineapple
- Lavender Tips
- Geranium Flower
- Tea Tree
- Fragrance Free
If we were to go on the website we’d see the sticks looking deliciously bright with cute descriptions under each stick.
Those of us that love Schmidt’s but are very intolerant of the baking soda formulas are spoiled for choice with their sensitive counterparts.
I won’t lie to ya…seeing the cool design choices for the newer sticks has really got me wanting to choose another stick and give it a try!
During the time when I first began my sensitive formula relationship there were far fewer options to choose from.
I decided on Geranium Flower because of all the ones available it seemed the most fruity + feminine (the scent combo I like best).
Magnesium hydroxide, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Oil, Maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) powder, Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) Wax, Tocopherol (vitamin E), Pelargonium graveolens (geranium) essential oil
I won’t lie to ya… I’ve never actually smelled geranium before. The smell isn’t bad but it definitely is no Bergamot + Lime.
My olfactory system tends to embrace scents that are more fruity and sweet like Dr. Bronner’s almond liquid castille soap (?omgggggggg I could live in that bottle), lemongrass essential oil, lemon essential oil, orange essential oil, and rosewater!
For that reason this scent isn’t really my cup of tea. However, it isn’t a bad smell and is pleasant enough.
The Texture and Usability
The sensitive formula is so much more creamy than the signature line. Because of that, the glide is amazing and very similar to shea butter… which we love! ?
Unfortunately, though, because it is so very creamy the mess-factor is increased by like 100%! ?
I already had trouble with the minuscule messiness of the Bergamot + Lime, but with this formula if I didn’t wipe the sides before replacing the cap we are talking mess on mess on mess.
This is problematic for me no likey messy!
Speaking of mess. Sorry to say but this deodorant was the worst for residue! Every morning I would either have to try and carefully put my top on, and even then if the deodorant slightly touched my clothes we are talking residue that can’t be removed with water and a towel; Meaning sometimes whole outfits had to be changed ?.
Best Tip Ever: Put paper towels under each arm and hold them there while you slide into your clothes! See video below x
Ah gee. For the first couple months this deodorant really seemed to be a winner. BUT, the more I wore it, the less effective it became. If I applied at 7.30am, by the time 1pm rolled around I had to reapply again.
If I forgot the deo or went out of the house with a smaller bag that did not contain my stick, I ran into major issues!
I ended up buying a second of the same scent to keep one on my skincare table at home and one in my handbag. For that reason this deo really went lower and lower in my top Natural Deo’s list.
This is definitely the smart choice for this deodorant in my opinion and luckily some of the scents do have travel size capabilities. This makes it easier to carry on the go which in my experience is a necessity for this formula!
Bad Skin Reaction?
For the most part, us in the natural deo world have bad reactions to one ingredient and one ingredient only: baking soda. Because this formula is made specifically without it I had no bad reaction whatsoever. Thank Goddess!
Overall, I rate this product a 6 out of 10. I really like Schmidt’s as a brand and am open to trying others in their sensitive range but because it just doesn’t last all day it is not THE one.
Would you Recommend?
If you like Schmidt’s as a brand and are baking soda-intolerant, I don’t see the harm in giving it a whirl. There are x14 choices so maybe one other than the Geranium will give better results. However, because the ingredients for the sensitive formulas are pretty much the same save for the essential oils ANNND because the magnesium is the ingredient that is meant to act as the main deodorizer, I definitely wouldn’t say it is the best baking-soda free option out there!
