Itchy Flaky Scalp Remedies that Saved my Life!
Dear Itchy, flaky scalp,
Please go away and NEVER EVER RETURN!!
-signed every itchy, flaky scalp sufferer in the world
Itchy scalp is the worst right? And while our friend, the good ole world wide web, offers plenty of many of home remedies and solutions, so many of us still have that recurring itch and those dreadful snowflakes!

For me, I’ve tried so many natural solutions:
- All natural dandruff shampoo
- Tea tree oil
- JBC oil
- Apple Cider Vinegar
- ACV + cinnamon
- Listerine
- Egg
- Henna
- Shea butter
- Curly-friendly anti itch creams
- Mixed oil
- Yoghurt
- Peppermint oil
- Aloe vera
- Neem oil
And YET the itch and flakiness always came back stronger than ever. It made me very frustrated, uncomfortable and just downright sad. Too much time did I spend either fighting the itch or giving in, and seeing those tiny flakes in the roots of my curls felt so disheartening.
Soooo I booked a consultation with a scalp doctor, but after seeing their list of approved products (read: not curly friendly) I backed right out and went back to the ‘natural’ drawing board.
I consumed blog after blog, video after video and yet nothing seemed to provide lasting results. Annnnd I even messaged my curly hair specialist, more than he appreciated, hoping to understand what I could do to stay in line with only using clean hair products while also providing relief from my troubles. But alas, I just couldn’t get any satisfaction.
That all changed with one video and one remedy!

Know Thy Skin
Now, before I get into that secret ingredient that’s helped me so much, I must stress the importance of a tailor made consultation. To determine the best remedy for you, you need to figure out what is going on with you, specifically!
The reason that nothing worked for me before is because I wasn’t dealing with dandruff nor dry scalp nor eczema. AND whenever I would search for remedies, most results were for dandruff, dry scalp or dermatitis.
But for me (and possibly you), my problem is with fungus AKA malassezia. This was confirmed with a trip to the skin doctor who let me know that my skin is hereditarily dealing with an overproduction of fungus! I know I know: ick but also: facts.
While your man wasn’t a scalp-specific doctor, my consultation with him helped me to understand my skin and also understand why the remedy I found on YT some months before, truly helped my itchy, flaky scalp.

The Surprising Ingredient
While doing my rounds of searching I stumbled across a video where a youtuber explained about malassezia and how to combat it with a probiotic soap.
It was revolutionary and something that I just hadn’t seen in all my research!
Now here’s the T, much like how yoghurt can help with an overproduction of yeast (candida), a probiotic soap works to do the same for overproduction of malessezia on the scalp.
While the thought of using a bar of soap on my curls didn’t delight me, I loved the scientific breakdown of it all and ordered the soap on Amazon without delay. I’m glad that I did because for the first time in 7 years I have this itch-relief that honestly feels life-saving!

My Itchy Scalp Remedy
My remedy is not perfect! It is also not foolproof, but of everything I have tried thus far it is the only thing to give these results for such a lengthy amount of time.
Disclosure: I cleanse my hair once a week and do find that even when following the steps below, that by days 5-7 I might see a flake or 2 and have an itch here or there. However in comparison with what I was dealing with before, a here/there itch and flake is nothing!
- Step 1 is to take antifungal/probiotic supplements! My vitamin of choice is odorless garlic
- Step 2 requires a good scalp massage at least weekly with an oil blend. I use Jamaican Black Castor oil, peppermint essential oil, a blend (I get from my local health food store), and Natrabalm’s dry scalp oil
- Step 3 is to wash with a probiotic soap. I buy mine from Amazon and use the one that was featured in the original YT video that I watched (see the vid below for more deets on the how!)
- Step 4 mix 1 tsp of salicylic acid with your cleanser of choice + ACV and wash the scalp with it to really prevent the fungus from building up! Do this once or twice a month only as needed!
